Review: It's A Motherfucking Pleasure

Keys; check. Wallet; check. Mobile; check. Checked your privileges? Perhaps you should. FlawBored - a trio comprising Samuel Brewer, Chloe Palmer and Aarian Mehrabani - are going to ask you!

Brewer and Mehrabani inform an expectant audience they are blind. Immediately, they seek to change the theatre environment by requesting the lights be dimmed so that they are unperturbed by them. However, now they worry audience members in row D might not be able to see the show. So the lights are brought up a little. No more than a little, mind: Brewer and Mehrabani don’t want to be perturbed by them!. Someone in row C seemingly has hearing difficulties. Brewer swiftly locates himself within their vicinity and raises his voice. Now somebody in row B has been identified as gay…so the material is tailored somewhat to their liking.

It’s A Motherfucking Pleasure navigates this precarious path to equality, and in so doing monetises identity. By reinforcing boundaries, you can watch the return on your investment rocket! If you’re in any way racist though or ‘identity-blind’, you’re simply not maximising profit. The performance cleverly uses the behavioural norms of social media and how we willingly compartmentalise ourselves by answering a series of seemingly innocuous questions. However, it becomes increasingly more difficult to communicate with ease without unwittingly insulting someone…sometimes simply by omission.

Naturally, you are requested to leave a 5* review.

It’s a Motherfucking Pleasure is entertaining and thought-provoking…but it does leave you wondering where that leaves us all. Steady! Easily taken as an insult!

It’s A Motherfucking Pleasure is at Underbelly Bristo Square until 27th Aug.
